The Iceman of Bolzano

The Iceman of Bolzano Italy

Those with an interest in archeology should not miss the opportunity to visit the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, about a one hour drive north from Lake Garda. The museum is on Via Museo and has some fascinating exhibits which date back to the Paleolithic period of 15,000 BC through to the Carolingian period. The extensive exhibits are presented on four floors of this lovely museum. Models, holograms, video and sound guides are all used to bring the local past to life.

The star exhibit of this local museum is the Bronze Age mummy of a peasant which was found preserved in the glacier of Val Seanles. It is believed to be 5300 years old. The cold conditions had even preserved the man’s clothing and equipment, giving a uniquely valuable insight into life at that time. The mummy was nicknamed ‘Otzi the Iceman’. He was named after the Otz Valley in which he was found. This amazingly well-preserved mummy of the man dates back to 3300 BC.

The mummy was discovered in 1991 by two German tourists. His body was frozen in the glacier of the Otztal Alps neat Bolzano on the border between Austria and Italy. At first he was treated as a recent corpse with little care taken as the body was removed from the ice using pick axes. It was only in the morgue at Innsbruck that the age of the body was eventually ascertained.

The body is thought to be of a 45 year old man who was 1.65 metres (5 feet 5 inches) tall and he weighed around 110 pounds at death. Pollen and his tooth enamel indicated he was born near Feldthurns, north of Bolzano and was probably a shepherd. The items found with him are also on display at the museum and include a copper axe, a flint knife, a quiver of arrows and some baskets. He was killed by a blow to the head and he had been shot in the shoulder with an arrow. He is the oldest natural human mummy in Europe and is well worth visiting on a day trip to pretty Bolzano.
