Archaeological Museum

The best known museum in the region is the Archaeological Museum in Via Museo. It has four floors of exhibits dating back to the Paleolithic period. It is best known for its Bronze Age mummy which was discovered in a nearby glacier, preserved in ice for around 3,300 years. More details can be found in the article ‘The Iceman of Bolzano’.

Civic Museum

The Civic Museum in Bolzano can be found on Via Cassa di Risparmio. It houses a fine collection of South Tyrolean history with works of art dating back to the Middle Ages. Exhibits include Madonna figures, Gothic altars and carved crucifixes. The museum also has a number of reconstructed interiors of ‘stuben’, which are rooms with traditional wooden furnishings in the authentic Alpine style. The museum also has some costumes and traditional masks. The 360 degree view from the top floor across the Dolomites and the Alps is a bonus!

Mercantile Museum

Those interested in the economic history of Bolzano will enjoy this interesting museum on Via Argentieri. The exhibits are in chronological order and show meeting rooms, the chancellor’s room and the magnificent furnishings in the Hall of Honour. The staircase in this room is particularly noteworthy. The museum has many civic documents, objets d’art and Baroque paintings.

Modern and Contemporary Art Museum

This modern museum was founded in 1987 and can be found on Dantestrasse/Via Dante 6. It focuses on the local German and Italian cultural traditions with several interesting art collections, some permanent and some of which are temporary.
