Bolzano and the Dolomites National Park

Bolzano and the Dolomites National Park

This trip is around 256 km each way.

To the northeast of Lake Garda are the craggy Dolomites, a section of the Alps. These gnarled crags extend from the Adige River in the west to the Piave Valley in the east and in August 2009 were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Part of these beautiful mountains to the north and west of Belluno are in the Dolomites National Park, known as the Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi. Many people visit the Dolomites to climb the Vie Ferrate, protected paths which were created during the First World War. There are a number of long distance paths running across this mountainous terrain called ‘Alte Vie’ or high paths. These long trails are known by number, from 1-8 and are not for the faint-hearted. They require at least a week to be walked and are served by a number of ‘Rifugi’ huts.

Bolzano

The Dolomites are a tourist mecca and are a wonderful area for driving, climbing, skiing in the winter, paragliding, hang gliding and the extreme parachute sport of base jumping from a fixed object. The capital of this area, known as the Alto Adige, is Bolzano, or Bozen which is 59km north of Trento and about 98km north of Riva del Garda. This small town has a fine 15th century Gothic Duomo which is more Austrian or German in style than Italian. The town also has an interesting ‘Museo Archeologico dell’Alto Adige’. The highlight of this museum is a most unexpected 5,300 year old mummified corpse called ‘Otzi the Iceman’ of what was probably a murder victim. Other points of interest are the statue in Walther Square of a german minstrel, Walther von der Vogelweide; the Lauben which is a mile-long arcade now housing high street shops; the monastery of Muri-Gries with baroque paintings of Martin Knoller and various wonderful castles in the area.

To the west of Bolzano are many cable cars which carry hillwalkers in summer and skiers in winter and offer amazing views up into the mountains.
